Safety puzzles

We all desire the feeling of safety but what does that look like for your child? Use this activity to help your child to express what safety looks like and address how you can create it together.

What you'll need

  • An A4 sheet of paper
  • Something to draw with (pencils, textras or crayons)
  • Scissors

Make your puzzle

Step 1: Ask your child to draw the first thing that comes to their mind when you mention the word "safe". Allow them ten minutes to complete it.
Step 2: cut the picture into 5-10 pieces (be careful to give young artists warning before this step)
Step 3: Challenge your child to put it back together again - you'll be amazed at what discussions are possible while they are engaged in the task.

A nice way to share this experience is to both draw pictures and challengeĀ each otherĀ to put the other person's back together.

Questions to help guide discussions

  • When do you feel most safe during the day?
  • Can you remember a time you didn't feel safe, how did you feel?
  • What can we do to be safe at home, the shops, school etc?
