On the first weekend in March, Life Education’s Ballarat educator Zoey delivered a session to a group of Indigenous young people at Bluelight’s first Koori BLAST Camp. Bluelight is an organisation that is a leader with youth engagement, and involves youth, police members and community volunteers.
Held at Bluelight’s Youth Camp in Maldon, the group enjoyed time in the Mobile Learning Classroom and Zoey delivered Think Twice, Life Education’s alcohol awareness module. The ThinkTwice module focuses on the short and long term physical, social and legal consequences of alcohol use, some myths surrounding the use of alcohol, and personal strategies to reduce alcohol related harm. It was an appropriate module to deliver some key harm minimisation messages to an at risk group and the session received overwhelmingly positive feedback.
Bluelight is an organisation which aims to empower youth to reach their full potential regardless of the adversity they may face, and this was the first time Life Education had worked in partnership with them. We hope that this relationship continues and we continue to have the opportunity to support each other to achieve our goals. We had a very positive response to this collaboration from Karen Burns, Victorian Bluelight Operations Manager who said “The program in the van was absolutely perfect for our audience and Zoey and Tom did a great job catering to all of the different ages that we had in the van. I am positive that the kids were engaged, they were asking and answering lots of questions.”
A big thank you to Zoey and Tom Cox, our Relationship and Program Coordinator, who supported Zoey to deliver the session with a special mention to Leon, the volunteer truck driver who delivered the Mobile Learning Classroom to Maldon.
