Pro surfer Layne Beachley blogs about the importance of keeping active, even in winter!
I get it. Keeping active in the colder months can be hard. The temperature drops, it’s harder to get out of bed in the mornings, harder to get the kids to school… but exercise is such an important part of keeping healthy!
For kids, it helps maintain balance in their lives. Their physical health benefits as does their emotional and social health. Think about it. Moving our bodies releases endorphins creating that rush of energy and sense of wellbeing while building muscle and bone strength. And, if you exercise with others, it’s easier to keep inspired and you get to have a good yarn at the same time.
Believe it or not, it’s even true for a pro surfer like me. Although you’re out there doing your own thing, more often than not, you’re sharing the waves with lots of like-minded people. A community of sorts. Who knows how many people I’d get to talk to every day if I didn’t get my daily fix?
Of course, surfing in winter isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. But what about other activities that use the same balance and core skills? Or leg and arm work? Like skating, skateboarding, snowboarding, rollerblading, trapeze, dance, pilates or yoga? Are they things your kids would be into? Or maybe they enjoy team sports like rugby, footy, soccer, hockey or netball? There are heaps of clubs and classes out there. Take a look at Kidspot’s list for some inspiration.
Did you know that the Australian Department of Health recommends children 5-12 years old (actually young people up to 17 years) should do at least an hour of moderate to vigorous intense physical activity every day for health benefits? Is this happening in your household? (Video games do not count!)
The key is finding something that your kids love doing because, if they’re passionate about it, they’ll get excited about doing it rather than see it as a chore.
And if you’re having difficulties motivating them to take part, why not get together to do things as a family? Go to the park. Ride your bikes together. Walk them to school. You’ll strengthen your bond with them and show them that you’re serious about keeping active and healthy too.
And mix it up. Kids love variety as well as challenges.
Get out there, folks. Be a great role model for your kids and keep your family happy and healthy! And maybe see you in the water one day.

Want to do something active with your kids?
Create a family disco! Take turns playing each person’s favourite music and have a boogie. This can be great fun for indoors and outdoors.
